The Benefits of Chiropractic Care during Pregnancy

Back Pain During Pregnancy

A large percentage of women experience back pain and pelvic pain during pregnancy. This is due to the shifting centre of gravity and increased load on the spine and pelvis.

Chiropractic care throughout your pregnancy can relieve and even prevent many of the discomforts associated with the changing mechanics in the back and pelvis.

Optimizing Your Delivery

Medical research has shown that regular chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can lead to an easier, safer and more natural delivery by optimizing the factors involved in the coordinated effort of labour.

The Bony Pelvis

The bones and joints of the pelvis must be able to open and stretch in a specific sequence to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal

The Uterine Muscles

During delivery, efficient and coordinated contraction of the uterine musculature is crucial. Misalignment in the low back or pelvis can lead to aberrant nerve supply and altered function of these muscles.

Baby Positioning

With proper balance and function of the uterus and ligaments throughout the pregnancy, the possibility for assuming the most ideal position for delivery are greatly increased.

The Webster Technique

The bony pelvis consists of three separate bones that join together to form three moveable joints. This dynamic structure adapts and changes throughout pregnancy to accommodate the growing baby. During labour and delivery these joints open and move to allow the baby to descend through the birth canal.

The uterus is suspended within the bony pelvis by a series of specific ligaments and muscles that work together with the bones of the pelvis to maintain optimal uterine support and positioning.

Pelvic misalignment can cause tightening and torsion of pelvic muscles and ligaments. These tense muscles and ligaments aberrantly affect the uterus, which can prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the safest and most efficient position for birth.

The Webster Technique is defined as a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment which enables Doctors of Chiropractic to establish balance in the pregnant woman's pelvis and reduce undue stress to her uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for optimal fetal positioning. Research has shown the Webster Technique to be very effective at preventing and correcting fetal mal-positioning including breech and transverse presentation.
